We seek to raise awareness within the academic community and among the general public about the mass atrocities taking place in the Gaza Strip.

Thirteen months have passed since Hamas’s devastating attack on Israel, which, according to Israel’s Social Security Agency, resulted in 1,139 people killed, including 766 civilians and 36 children, and 253 people taken hostage. Although the victims were not exclusively Israeli Jews, this attack marked the largest single-day loss of Jewish life since the Holocaust.

According to the United Nations, as of 12 November 2024, more than 43,600 Palestinians were killed in what has been described as Israel’s disproportionate response in the Gaza war with Hamas. Over 103,000 individuals have been wounded, with 10,000 reported missing. The final death toll remains uncertain as many bodies remain trapped under the rubble, testifying to the immense suffering of civilians in Gaza. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported that, among the identified victims, 13,319 were children, and women accounted for over a quarter of all deaths. The single largest age category was children aged five to nine, and as many as 786 infants under the age of one were killed. In addition, 165 children were killed in the West Bank. Over 60% of buildings in Gaza, including the majority of hospitals, schools, universities, and cultural sites, have been destroyed. This unprecedented destruction has forcibly displaced 1.9 million people – nearly 90% of Gaza’s population – who are now largely deprived of essential resources like water, electricity, food, and medicine due to the Israel’s blockade.

As members of the Department of Sociology, we also express our solidarity with the academic community in Gaza and highlight the unique hardships they face. In a scale of destruction that can only be described as scholasticide, 11,249 students and 444 teachers and university professors were killed in Gaza as of November 2024. In a one-year period, all universities, along with 90% of schools, were completely destroyed.

Given the scale and nature of the crimes committed in Gaza, numerous prominent scholars of the Holocaust and genocide studies such as Raz Segal, Omer Bartov, Adam Jones and Ernest Verdeja, have referred to Israel’s actions as genocide. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has also raised significant concerns regarding the gravity of the crimes committed. The ICJ has accepted South Africa’s genocide case against Israel, acknowledging the plausibility of Israel’s violation of the Genocide Convention in Gaza. In addition, the ICJ has deemed the presence of Israeli forces and the construction of settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories of the West Bank as illegal under international law. Key international bodies, including the International Criminal Court, World Health Organization, United Nations, and European Union, as well as human rights organizations such as Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and Israeli human rights groups B’Tselem and Yesh Din, have denounced the occupation of Palestinian territories and settlement construction in the West Bank as unlawful. Furthermore, the ICJ has emphasized that any support provided to Israel in maintaining control over these territories is also in violation of international law, a point of particular relevance to the Republic of Croatia.

As sociologists, and above all as humanists, we cannot remain silent in the face of the systematic destruction of entire communities, regardless of the terminology used. We are particularly concerned about the fact that, following the events 7 October 2023, the solidarity of Croatian politicians, media and academic community has largely been one-sided, with a lack of support for Palestine and its citizens. Therefore, we urge all academic institutions, political actors, and especially the Government of the Republic of Croatia, to assume both moral and political responsibility. This includes condemning the mass atrocities in Gaza, calling for an immediate ceasefire, holding perpetrators accountable for crimes committed, and advocating for a political resolution through peaceful negotiations. Considering Croatia’s recent historical experience and its political stance on the need for a two-state solution (Palestine and Israel), we urge the Government of the Republic of Croatia to join the 146 UN member states and 11 EU member states in recognizing Palestine as an independent state. Such an action would convey a message of true solidarity with the Palestinian people.

Members of the Department of Sociology

Dr. Dragan Bagić, Dr. Andriana Benčić Kužnar, Dr. Jasmina Božić, Đurđica Degač, Dr. Branka Galić, Dr. Vladimir Ivanović, Luka Jurković, Ivana Jurković Kuruc, Dr. Kruno Kardov, Dr. Ksenija Klasnić, Dr. Goran Koletić, Dr. Ivan Landripet, Dr. Davorka Matić, Dr. Krunoslav Nikodem, Jelena Ostojić, Dr. Helena Popović, Ivan Roško, Izvor Rukavina, Sandra Šević, Dr. Bruno Šimac, Dr. Aleksandar Štulhofer, Dr. Tanja Vučković Juroš, Dr. Anton Vukelić, Dr. Jana Vukić, Dr. Krešimir Žažar, Dr. Drago Župarić-Iljić
