It was a joy to come back to my alma mater UCL/UCL SSEES and participate in the XI ICCEES (International Council for Central and East European Studies) World Congress. What sets the congress apart is that it brought together a fascinating mix of voices from across various disciplines, all diving deep into the complexities of Central and Eastern Europe. The five days were packed not just with thought-provoking presentations, but also with a rich cultural program – exhibitions, film screenings, and plenty of great conversations in between.
As part of it, I had the chance to present what I consider the most compelling parts of my PhD research on how Croatia and the Czech Republic responded in very different ways to the 2015 migration crisis, especially in terms of their relationship with the EU. Looking towards the horizon now to expand and update this research beyond the PhD!
